Great with the automatic gearbox especially around town and it pulls really well from traffic lights. Fairly good economy average around 40 mpg, a lot better on a long run, 55 mpg plus.
The 1.5 is probably the shout. Arguably the sweet spot in the range performance / economy-wise. After the 1.8 (158bhp) you may find the 1.0 slightly sluggish, especially if you use your estate to lug stuff about. Good luck. Either way, the Mk3 is a decent step up in most regards.
